A new career in healthcare

Read Sujata’s story to see how a change in direction led to a rewarding career in healthcare.

Before moving to New Zealand, I had a background in retail. When I came to New Zealand, I wanted to take the opportunity to change my career path and move away from retail into the medical and healthcare field.

I was looking for a career where I could work with people, learn new skills, and make a meaningful difference in the community. Tāmaki Health gave me the opportunity to take that first step into healthcare while being part of a supportive and professional environment.

Starting a new career path was a big change for me, but it has been a rewarding journey. I’ve had the opportunity to learn, grow in confidence, and develop professionally while contributing to the care and wellbeing of patients.

Growing with Tāmaki Health

I started my journey at Tāmaki Health as a Medical Receptionist. Within my first three months, I became confident in the role and developed a good understanding of the clinic’s day-to-day operations and patient needs.

As I gained more experience, I took on additional responsibilities, including helping to manage patient flow and ensuring the clinic ran smoothly and efficiently. This gave me the opportunity to develop my communication, organisation and leadership skills.

Within nine months of joining Tāmaki Health, I was promoted to Clinic Coordinator. This was a significant milestone for me and a great opportunity to take on more responsibility and continue growing in my career.

Looking back, I’m proud of how much I’ve learned and how quickly I’ve been able to progress since starting my journey in healthcare.

What I enjoy most

Firstly, it’s the team I work with. Having supportive, friendly and hardworking people around me makes a big difference and creates a positive environment to come to work every day.

I also genuinely enjoy my role as a Clinic Coordinator. I like the variety and responsibility that comes with the position, and I enjoy being involved in the day-to-day running of the clinic and helping things run smoothly for both our patients and the team.

For me, it’s the combination of great people, a positive team environment and enjoying the work I do that keeps me motivated and looking forward to coming to work.

Moments I’m proud of

One of the moments I’m especially proud of was preparing our Urgent Care audit. Being new to this role and having to prepare for an audit was definitely a challenge. There was a lot to learn in a short period of time, and I had to quickly understand the processes, requirements and expectations while making sure everything was in place.

I was really proud that we achieved zero administrative corrective actions. It was a great achievement and reflected the hard work that went into preparing for the audit.

Another memorable achievement was during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Our clinic won 1st place in the competition. I was proud of this because it showed what we can achieve when the whole team comes together and works towards a common goal.

These experiences have stayed with me because they showed me how much I had grown in a short time, both professionally and as a leader.

Being part of the team

Being part of my clinic team means being part of a supportive group of people who work together towards the same goal - providing the best possible experience and care for our patients.

I really value the teamwork and support we have within the clinic. Everyone has different strengths and responsibilities, and I enjoy working alongside our clinical and administrative teams to make sure the clinic runs smoothly. Communication, respect and helping each other are important to us, especially on busy and challenging days.

As a Clinic Coordinator, I also see my role as supporting the team, listening to their concerns, helping find solutions and making sure everyone feels valued.

I’m proud to work with a team where we can rely on each other, celebrate our achievements together and continue learning from one another.
